This video has more than 4 million views. The title is “Hans Rosling’s 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes – The Joy of Stats,” but it hardly seems adequate to convey all that is explained in five minutes.  Do you have an alternate idea for a title?  Let us know.

  1. Carter has inspired me to also make a numerical list of my reactions to the video.
    1. Yes, Carter, Mr. Pendleton would definitely like the part about the Industrial Revolution.
    2. Poor Congo.
    3. I never thought of displaying the world’s progress (or not-so-much-progress in the case of Africa) in this way before. I think it is an innovative way to display the effects of many different events over the past 200 years.

  2. Very interesting video. Thanks for posting it.

I had to go look up more on Hans Rosling because he doesn’t mention in the video how he is measuring the income levels – in inflation adjusted dollars, or 1781. He is measuring income as GDP per capita, PPP$ inflation-adjusted.

It’s really amazing how Russia entirely drops off the grid in 1934. They dropped below the lowest life span represented, and then bounced back. You see similar swings with China in the 40’s.

When politicians talk about the United States not being the world leader (whatever that term really means) you almost want to show them this and explain that all of us moving into the same quadrant is a good thing.
